Career & Life Transitions
Are you struggling with a career change, a recent job loss, or transitioning to retirement? Are you looking for a change in life, but looking at options/opportunities feel too overwhelming?
Both career changes and life transitions are far more complex than a simple change. In more cases than not, these choices are deeply personal and can affect your identity, your belief about yourself, or where you believe or feel you “should” be in your life.
Career Changes
If you feel lost, uncertain, or conflicted about the career choices you have or haven’t made, and about your future, you are not alone. For young adults, it’s common to have doubts and insecurities about where you are going in your life. For middle-aged adults who are established in their field, you may not find your accomplishments to be as fulfilling as you thought. And for older adults, you may feel as though you haven’t set yourself up for your retirement as good as you could have. You may be struggling with knowing where you want to go in your life, or have specific circumstances that make life transitions more difficult.
If you are thinking of changing careers, you may be having thoughts like:
“I don’t know if this is really for me.”
“I’d rather be doing something else, but I don’t know if I can do it.”
“I don’t know what to do anymore.”
These thoughts may be accompanied by feelings of confusion, disappointment, overwhelm, shame, grief, and so much more. Therapy can offer a grounded place to sort through the options, choices, and opportunities while supporting you through your discomfort, reconnect with what matters to you, and make educated decisions that feel more aligned with your core values. Together, we can slow down, make sense of what you’re feeling, help you process through those symptoms, and intentionally guide you in honouring your new-found career path.
Life Transitions
Whether planned or unexpected, life transitions or other circumstantial events can bring up feelings of grief, emptiness, loneliness, and fears of the unknown.
You might be:
- Adjusting to job loss, getting promoted, or going through a major change at work
- Moving houses or to a new city or country or down-sizing
- Transitioning into or out of a relationship
- Becoming a parent, an empty nester, or a caregiver
- Preparing for or adjusting to retirement
Even positive life changes can bring up conflicting ‘bittersweet’ feelings including grief and joy. Closing a chapter can feel final as the familiar pattern of behaviour ends. It may incite questions about your identity or values. Opening a new chapter can feel scary, exciting, and intimidating.
