Are you grieving? Is someone in your life grieving?
Grief can be complex. It can manifest in multiple ways, depending on many factors. It may appear as lashing out, crying, or something completely different. The “five stages of grief” that are well-known are not “one-size-fits-all.” Not everyone will experience the five stages, nor is it healthy to try to sort people who are grieving into specific stages. Some may experience a significant emotional response to a loss and some may not, grief is not to be compared.
Grief is a natural and normal emotion that happens to people who have experienced significant life events. In turn, these life events that cause grief will vary from person to person. Grief can result from:
- Death of a loved one (including miscarriages)
- Divorce or other heartbreak
- Loss of a pet
- Loss of a home, community
- Career change
- Estrangement
- Aging parents
- Loss of trust or security
- Loss of identity
- Along with other life events
If you or someone you love who has experienced a loss, know that you are not alone. Many grieving people do not know how to make the pain stop. We understand how hard it can be to function normally and be happy again after a loss, especially when people around you don’t understand.
Despite what others may say, time is not the healer of broken hearts. With time, the intensity of the emotional pain may decrease—but it still hurts. Instead, we must learn how to grieve properly.
